  • Max D. Chown, age 69, of Mount Ida, AR, passed away September 17, 2017. He was born February 8, 1948 to the late Bob and Doris Chown in Muscatine, Iowa. Max is preceded in death by his parents, Bob and Doris Chown, brother, Bobby Chown, and grandson, Hunter Chown.

    Survivors include: wife, Jane Chown, children, Tami Streinz (Jesse) of West Branch, IA, Todd Chown (Nancy) of West Liberty, IA, and Chris Holway (Diana) of North Liberty, IA. Grandchildren, Cole Chown of West Liberty, IA, Gavin Chown of West Liberty, IA, Nate Chown of West Liberty, IA, Morgan Dragovich of West Branch, IA, and Jack Dragovich of West Branch, IA, sisters, Karen “Kay” Cline (Bill) of West Liberty, IA, brothers, Fred L. “Pete” Chown (Judy) of Farmington, MN, James Chown (Bonnie) of Crivetz, WI, Dana L. Chown (Julie) of Lone Tree, IA and Jon Kevan Chown (Mary) of Mount Ida, AR.

    Everyone who loved Max knew his love for fishing and hunting, and how he carried on his Chown’s Appliance experience here, even after he retired. He loved his Joplin Trailer Park and all his “Tenants”, and entertaining during happy hour in the fish house. He was especially a warrior against cancer, even through the battle he continued to entertain, and make sure everyone had what they needed. He got up each day to prove to everyone he could and to stay with those he loved in this world.

    A family and friend gathering will be held Saturday, September 23, 2017, 3-5 p.m. at the Joplin Methodist Church, 51 Mountain Harbor Rd. Mount Ida, AR 71957. In lieu of flowers please make donations to Our Promise Cancer Resources at Genesis Cancer Center 1333 Harmony Park Circle Hot Springs, AR 71913. Arrangements were made under the direction of Thornton Funeral Home of Mount Ida, AR.     So sad to hear of Max's passing. He was such a fighter and had so many friends in the Joplin area and beyond. David loved visiting with Max and ironically as life is, they are both at peace and at rest with our heavenly Father.     Max and I were high school classmates, graduating from Lone Tree (Iowa) High School in 1967. My memories of Max are all very positive. He was a great friend and loved having a good time. My condolences to his wife and family.

    During a couple temporary lay offs from IHC Company I went to work for Max the knowledge I gained on plumbing, wiring, and furnace work has been invaluable in years since! We didn't have a fish shack to meet at the end of day, but met at the pop cooler in the back room. Which for some reason always had some barley pop inside the door. As if we didn't have enough work to get boat blinds ready for each season we decided to build a Mississippi river blind. This blind was built on stilts. With Max's access to a few items like a wall furnace, two 100 pound propane tanks, and a full size stove for the kitchen. We had it made! When he told me he was going to bring a stove out I teased and said I did not want a antique white one. He asked me what color I preferred and I said avocado green. And you guessed it, he delivered. So many hunts to recollect! Rest in Peace!

    I didn't know Max Chown personally but at reading his memorial obituary, just had to express my thoughts. I was so touched and moved by the words that even though Mr Max suffered with cancer, he still got "up" every day just to prove he could to those who loved and still love him. What a courageous brave man. I remember the old Joplin trailer park well and the Joplin "Mickey Mouse " bait shop/grocery store. It was a favorite place of my family's to stop on summer outings because my younger sister and I honestly believed "Mickey Mouse " operated the store. Of course, we soon discovered "Mickey " didn't. We still enjoyed that store. Thank God for a strong courageous man like Max Chown who faced his adversary, the big "C" with fortitude and courage. He has a beautiful smile in his posted picture because I think he knew he would get to meet Jesus soon. God bless all of Mr. Chowns family. A Mt. Ida Resident, Ms. Edna M. (Egleston) L Herault
